Hygiene and Periodontal Care

There are many issues with gum disease (periodontal disease) which most patients are not aware of that can lead to severe problems, including tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold teeth in the mouth. Many signs of gum disease are painless and therefore not detected by the patient.

There is a bacterial plaque that is a sticky colorless film which is attached to the teeth and contributes to the damage associated with periodontal disease. These plaque cause gums to become inflamed and bleed easily. If left untreated, the disease worsens as pockets of infection form between the teeth and gums. This causes receding gums and loss of supporting bone. Regular appointments for hygiene care are crucial to maintaining healthy gums and teeth.

Dr. Woodard's goal is to educate each patient in the care of their gums to achieve the highest level of health possible. Be sure to check your gums regularly, always looking for signs of reddening, swelling and bleeding. If these are present, check with Dr. Woodard's office to have these signs evaluated. Dr. Woodard's team will develop a hygiene treatment plan to fit your specific needs.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

In the past, teeth were most commonly repaired with amalgam (silver) fillings or gold restorations. With advances in modern dental materials and techniques, teeth can now be restored with a more aesthetic and natural appearing material. Composite or tooth colored fillings are state-of-the-art restorative materials which allow Dr. Woodard to repair your broken or decayed teeth in a way that is undetectable to the eye. These fillings actually strengthen the teeth in comparison to a silver colored filling. Over time, research and development of these white fillings has made them very long lasting and serviceable.

Same Day Crowns

We now have the technology to make same day crowns while you wait in our office. We have the latest in crown fabrication with the purchase of an E4D CAD/CAM system. It is a state of the art machine that allows us to scan your prepared tooth and mill it with our in-office mill while you wait. The crown is crystallized in a high heat furnace and then cemented onto your tooth in the same day that the crown is prepared. The procedure takes approximately two and one-half hours but does not require you to wear a temporary crown for 2 weeks and return for a second appointment. Incredible!

Please ask our trained staff about our newest technology here at Woodard Family Dentistry. For those patients that want to have the traditional crown procedure done due to time issues, we can still accommodate that. Those procedures are explained below.

Crowns & Bridges

For years, crowns and bridges have protected and restored teeth to their natural function and continue to be a common procedure used today to treat badly damaged, decayed or lost teeth and restore function to severely worn surfaces of teeth. Once Dr. Woodard's team has examined your teeth, it may be determined that you have some decayed or broken teeth which need to be protected with a procedure other than a filling. A crown may be constructed to restore an individual damaged tooth back to its original form and function, while a bridge may be utilized to replace one or more missing teeth. These restorations are cemented onto the teeth and are permanent.

There are many types of crowns available to use for the restoration of worn and broken down teeth. The materials are all excellent and can function for years after proper selection and placement. Crowns are made from either gold, all porcelain or porcelain fused to gold.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers, sometimes also termed "dental veneers" or "dental porcelain laminates," are one of cosmetic dentistry's more recent developments. Veneers are a covering over the front surface of teeth that change the appearance without having to remove much of the tooth surface. Veneers can change the esthetics of the patient’s front teeth in a very remarkable way. These wafer-thin shells of porcelain which are bonded to the front side of the teeth can be an excellent cosmetic solution for teeth that are stained, chipped or slightly misaligned. Porcelain veneers resist staining and create a very life-like tooth appearance.

Implants

Over the years, tooth replacement has been a challenge for dentists and patients. We now have excellent methods of replacing missing teeth and restoring the dentition to normalcy without affecting the teeth adjacent to the missing teeth. Implants are extremely successful and are the state-of-the-art in replacing missing teeth. A dental implant is a small, sturdy, titanium post that acts as the root structure would for a natural tooth. A dental implant is placed into your upper or lower jaw bone. After the bone has grown around the implant, implants can hold a crown, bridge or over-denture just like roots hold natural teeth in place.

Many people have had problems with their dentures not fitting or being loose and falling out at inopportune times. Implants can save these patients much frustration and embarrassment by anchoring the denture to the implants and fixing them in a permanent or semi-permanent position.

Dental implants do require the same maintenance as natural teeth. This includes brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.

Root Canals

Root canal procedures are performed when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or the pulp (blood vessels and connective tissue) becomes damaged. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Many people are afraid of root canals because they think the procedure is painful. Actually, most people report that the procedure itself has no more discomfort than having a filling placed. Typically the discomfort experienced in the period leading up to coming into the office is truly the most painful period of time, not the root canal procedure itself.

Dr. Woodard and his staff are committed to providing these procedures in a comfortable and caring manner. Occasionally we will refer a patient to specialists for treatment but most root canals can be performed in-house.

Once the X-Ray is taken, Dr. Woodard can view the image in as little as three seconds.

Bleaching/Teeth Whitening

Whitening is used to correct discoloration of teeth by removing brown and yellow staining. The term "teeth whitening" can refer to a number of techniques to improve the brightness of your teeth. Teeth bleaching is a chemical process used to lighten the color of your teeth. The procedure can be performed in your home, using materials provided by our office. Before you embark on a home teeth whitening regimen, Dr. Woodard's office will create a custom mouth tray, which is a critical component of the treatment. The mouth tray ensures that the correct amount of whitening solution is used and that your teeth are properly exposed to the whitening solution. The custom-made tray provides for a better fit than a one-size-fits-all mouth trays sold in stores.

Dr. Woodard's office will provide you with the materials and instructions, and also answers questions you may have about the routine. A home whitening session can last for one to two hours, during which time you will have the tray and solution in your mouth. Typically the treatment will take from two to four weeks, depending on the results you desire.
